While it’s true that EV’s have a lower lifetime carbon footprint than gas or hybrid cars, like any new vehicle, their tens of thousands of components each have extensive carbon footprints. Therefore the most sustainable car to buy is a used EV.

If your budget is limited and precludes purchasing any EV, consider buying a used and fuel efficient car. Used and fuel efficient gas cars are a great sustainable alternative to new EVs.
